Free city buses, a clean environment and friendly locals have rated among Adelaide’s best attributes by international students taking part in an innovative letter writing competition.

More than 200 international students took part in the contest, writing 250-word letters on their experiences in Adelaide and thoughts on the city, with the five winners each receiving a AUD$500 bank account with the ANZ Bank.

The Letter’s Home competition was organised by Education Adelaide – Adelaide’s peak agency for marketing SA to international students – and is part of a year-long program of events designed to make students feel welcomed and valued by the South Australian community.

The letters reveal that students love the Adelaide Central Markets, the Royal Adelaide Show, Glenelg beach, South Australia’s wines and the welcome they receive from locals including the Lord Mayor’s annual welcome reception for new international students.

The competition provided an ideal opportunity to show students that the South Australian community is interested in what they have to say, and was also a valuable learning exercise. Education Adelaide didn’t just ask for praise from students – the organisation was also keen to hear how South Australia could better assist students during their stay in Adelaide.

Free city buses and discounted public transport rated highly among students, reinforcing Adelaide’s decision to offer international students the same travel concessions as local students. This gives Adelaide a major competitive advantage over some other Australian cities which don’t offer those concessions.
